Several European projects and other European initiatives of relevance for the solid biomass value chain are going on.
Below a list including the projects to which uP_running is connected.
EuroPruning – Development and implementation of a new and non existent logistics chain for biomass from pruning (collaborative project co-financed by FP7)
Summary
EuroPruning project aims to be the take-off for an extensive utilisation of the agricultural prunings for energy in Europe. The project aims to the development of new improved logistics for pruning residues. This includes harvesting, transport and storage for agricultural prunings (fruit tree, vineyards and olive grove prunings and branches from up-rooted trees).
Connection to uP_running
EuroPruning finished on July 2016. uP_runnig will exploit the huge expertise and knowledge created by EuroPruning: a) the national analysis of 10 countries on pruning use for performing a bioenergy sector analysis and developing a strategic plan at EU level; b) the significant results from EuroPruning to prepare a draft of policy reccomendations and roadmap; c) the EuroPruning demonstration experiences (machinery catalogue, storage guidlines, business models for pruning); d) the sampling points, experiences and success cases for the implementation of the uP_running Observatory.

Vineyards4Heat – Vineyards to reduce the CO2 footprint: a sustainable strategy to provide heat and cold to cellars with biomass generated in the territory (co-financed by LIFE +)
Summary
The aim is to promote the use of leftover biomass from vine pruning of the Penedès to generate decentralized bioenergy, by reducing CO2 emissions, bringing down energy bills and creating work places. Thus, this project should contribute to laying the bases for managing and financing of biomass resource helping to meet the objectives of the strategy 20-20-20. It is, therefore, a local strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change while allowing businesses of wine and cava sector to be more competitive by helping to achieve a more competitive economic area: low in carbon emissions and high in added value to the territory of the DO Penedès.
Connection to uP_running
uP_running will take into account the policy recommendations, business model, key for success and good practices for the use of biomass from vineyards. Both ongoing projects promote the mutual public visualisation and interconnection of their results.

SUCELLOG – Triggering the creation of biomass logistic centres by the agro-industry (co-financed by Intelligent Energy Europe Program)
Summary
SUCELLOG aims to widespread the participation of the agrarian sector in the sustainable supply of solid biofuels in Europe. SUCELLOG action focuses in an almost unexploited logistic concept: the implementation of agro-industry logistic centres in the agro-industry as a complement to their usual activity evidencing the large synergy existing between the agro- economy and the bio-economy.
Connection to uP_running
uP_running will use the SUCELLOG expertise for a) the consultancy and feasibility to beneficiaries selected to implement new value chains and b) to prepare the training materials for the consultancy to entrepreneurs c) the initiatives detected by SUCELLOG in caves, wineries and olive mills willing to start use of pruning or plantation removal biomass.

BIOMASUD plus – Developing the sustainable market of residential Mediterranean solid biofuels
Summary
The project BIOMASUD plus has as objective the design and the implementation of mechanisms of support that they help to the development of a sustainable solid biomass market. A few minimal sustainability requests will be defined in the whole chain of value for this market. Also, there will be created a system that audits and certifies the fulfilment of these requisites, as well as a system of traceability that allows to manage the resources from a global perspective.
Connection to uP_running
uP_running will use the BIOMASUD expertise and tools as the traceability platform, that is a stakeholder database, and the BIORAISE application for “on-line” evaluation of resources of agricultural and forest biomass. Both projects are interested in pruning biomass, to be object of standardising through BIOMASUD plus. Results on biomass quality analysis and final consumers perception is a common interest in both projects.

BioRES – Sustainable Regional Supply Chains for Woody Bioenergy
Summary
BioRES aims at introducing the innovative concept of Biomass Logistic and Trade Centres (BLTCs) in Serbia, Croatia and Bulgaria based on international cooperation with European technology leaders.
Connection to uP_running
uP_running project will benefit from the best operative practices produced.

Bioenergy4Business – Uptake of Solid Bioenergy in European Commercial Sectors (Industry, Trade, Agricultural and Service Sectors)
Summary
The project aims at supporting and promoting the (partial) substitution of fossil fuels (such as coal, oil, gas) used for heating with available bioenergy sources (such as by-products of the wood-based industry, forest biomass, pellets, straw and other agricultural biomass products).
Connection to uP_running
The next calculation tools that have been developed under B4B project will be used within Task 3 realization: “Solid biomass fuel parameters” and “Bioheat profitability assessment tool”.

greenGain – Supporting Sustainable Energy Production from Biomass from Landscape Conservation and Maintenance Work
Summary
The project looks for solutions to increase energy utilisation of biomass feedstock coming from landscape conservation and maintenance work (LCMW) carried out in the public interest.
Connection to uP_running
uP_running will use the good practices developed about the promotion and success of LCMW (policies, support mechanisms, intersectional alliances, etc.) and the use as pruning as potential input for biomass logistic centres based on multiple agro- and forestry resources. The knowledge exchange is being promoted concerning the biomass of olive tree plantations, as greenGain in Italy includes as case and pilot experience the biomass from restoring abandoned olive fields as a lansdscaping work.

S2BIOM – Delivery of sustainable supply of non-food biomass to support a “resource-efficient” Bioeconomy in Europe
Summary
The main objective is to support the sustainable delivery of non-food biomass feedstock at local, regional and pan European level through developing strategies, and roadmaps that are informed by a “computerized and easy to use” toolset (and respective databases) with updated harmonized datasets at local, regional, national and pan European level for EU28, Western Balkans, Moldova, Turkey and Ukraine.
Connection to uP_running
Assessments of the biomass potential from orchard residues down to a NUTS3 level are available by the S2Biom biomass supply tool.

AGROinLOG – Demonstration of innovative integrated biomass logistics centres for the Agro-industry sector in Europe
Summary
The main goal is the demonstration of Integrated Biomass Logistic Centres (IBLC) for food and non-food products, evaluating their technical, environmental and economic feasibility. The project is based on three agro-industries in the fodder (Spain), olive oil production (Greece) and cereal processing (Sweden) sectors that are willing to deploy new business lines in their facilities to open new markets in bio-commodities (energy, transport and manufacturing purposes) and intermediate bio-products (transport and biochemicals).
Connection to uP_running
The activities as IBLC in Greece based on olive pruning and olive cake are being coordinated with uP_running to promote cross fertilisation of knowledge and results between both projects.

BioEnergyTrain – European cooperation for higher education
Summary
BioEnergyTrain brings together fifteen partners from six EU countries to create new post-graduate level curricula in key bioenergy disciplines, and a network of tertiary education institutions, research centres, professional associations, and industry stakeholders encompassing the whole value chain of bioenergy from field/forest to integration into the sustainable energy systems of buildings, settlements and regions.
Connection to uP_running
The project covers the horizontal issue promoted by uP_running about training of technicians and professionals that may fuel the opportunity of continuous training and knowledge growth.
