The main purpose is to perform a detailed assessment of the operating conditions that govern the bioenergy sector in relation to APPR biomass in each one of the 4 demo regions taken into account by the project and to elaborate a consequent action plan considering the contribution of the most relevant stakeholders. A progressive scaling-up will expand the analysis at national level, for 7 EU countries, first, and then at European level.
Deliverables
The main objective is to produce success cases for APPR biomass mobilization useful as base for future replication. A total of 20 incipient APPR supply chains will be object of support and demonstration in 4 demo countries (ES, IT, EL, UA). At least a new commercial supply chain will be started and monitored per demo country by end of project.
Deliverables
The main objective is to register and share all experiences and success cases registered by the uP_running and to promote an active observation and reporting of pruning potentials from the agrarian sector. The simple platform available in 8 languages (EN, ES, IT, EL, UA, PT, FR, HR) aims to abate skepticism by showing that APPR is currently being utilized. By showing where and how is if being exploited, is a key element for awareness raising and finding examples and models to follow.
Deliverables
The aim is to extend the project results to other areas out of the regional framework of the demo regions and countries. Training materials for better understanding APPR biomass business potentials and for executing consultancies to entrepreneurs will be developed and translated to all project languages. The trainings will be done to agrarian associations, extension services and consultants in both the DCs – Demo Countries (ES, IT, EL, UA) and the OCs – Outreach Countries (PT, FR, HR).
Deliverables
Uncertainty in decision making towards APPR wood utilization is a current barrier as declared by multiple early entrepreneurs, who found no support when aiming to manage APPR residues in an alternative way. Supporting potential entrepreneurs in decision making through a consultancy is a key piece to promote the expansion and penetration of APPR biomass throughout all Europe. The consultancies are to be carried out by the trainees directly under guidance of uP_running partners, being an element to promote the active learning-by-doing and to ensure the creation of a permanent capacity for consultancy on APPR biomass utilization.
Deliverables
uP_runing aims to go beyond of its territorial framework and transfer its approach and results to agrarian or other sectorial clusters in a set of 7 adhered countries. Adherents will be object of coaching and transfer of project results. These actions are accompanied by other potential synergistic actions like capacity building and dissemination events at EU level.
Deliverables
uP_running will carry out an advocacy campaign for the rightness of the cause so as to engage government, businesses and large institutions to correct barriers and influence decisions through political or legal action. The policy recommendations, the existing barriers and solutions and the potential feasible options to succeed in managing APPR residues as an energy feedstock will be transferred through personal meeting with policy makers and lobbying meetings actively organized by uP_running. Advocay actions are planned at regional level in DCs, at national level (all project countries) and at EU level (in Brussels).
Deliverables
The main objective is to widely spread uP_running results to trigger changing in behavior towards the adoption of new approaches to use woody APPR for a sustainable energy value chain. This activity aims at raising awareness about the real value of biomass and the opportunities linked to it among different target groups. It includes the project website set-up and maintenance, a constant presence in media addressing the targeted audience, the participation in fairs and events, the preparation of written monographs and videos, participation in EU networks, and the celebration of dissemination events at national an EU level.
Deliverables
Agrarian Prunings and Plantation Removal (APPR) refers to agricultural woody residues produced as result of horticultural operations applied to vineyards, olive groves and fruit plantations.
Agrarian Pruning: operations carried out annually, biennially, or every several years. Its targets may be diverse: prepare the tree shape according to the preferred conduction system of branches, to maintain tree size (structural pruning, topping), promote an appropriate shadowing for the fruit, or to increase the production of fruits with larger size, among others.
Plantation Removals: operations of restoring the field to an initial stage for starting a new crop cycle. Trees are usually up-rooted with excavators and accumulated in piles; but they can also be felled and hauled outside the field. Roots are then obtained later through an up-rooting operation.
